FWSQ Week 1

This weeks first block is CHURN DASH.

This block is a great one to get started on those Thangles. For this block you will need your 2" pack.

After cutting your pieces and making those HST's you will join each square into a row of 3 and then join the three rows together.

Block 2 is WRENCH!

Yep, you guessed it. Same pattern just different fabric placement. I will try to pair up the blocks so that you can either be using the same templates or rotary cutting measurements each week.

Now if you notice in my Wrench block I have used a directional fabric. If you are using a directional print, background or foreground, and want it all 'up the right way' you can achieve this by flipping a thangle  over and sewing it right side down. You may like to trace the lines to the back of the thangle if you are having trouble seeing the lines through the paper. IE Sew one thangle paper the right way and the other paper the flipped way.

Don't forget, to get this weeks rotary cutting instructions or paper piecing templates, email me at cobarquiltshop@aapt.net.au with your purchase receipt of the book and I will send out those details.

Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt Sew along

Getting started!

BOOK!!!
Firstly to complete this quilt you are going to need the book. We will have info here to help you along the way but the book is a must. If you need a copy we have them available in our store located at 25 Marshall St Cobar NSW or we can arrange for a mail order to be sent to you by calling us on 0268 363606

FABRIC!!!
Although no exact requirements are given to complete your blocks there is requirements for the sashing, cornerstones, etc. I have asked quite a few people who have completed the quilt and  the feedback indicated that around 50 fat quarters will give you a good variety of fabrics throughout the quilt top and is adequate enough to complete the queen size quilt blocks.

THANGLES!!
In my opinion these are a must!!! It is a paper template that will help to avoid stretching of the bias edges when making half square triangles. There will be times when it is necessary to sew the bias edge but this will greatly reduce that number.

You will need a packet of 1", 1.5", 2" and 3" thangles.

This is a video demonstrating the use of
Thangles. Those here in Australia the RRP is $12.50 per packet and they too are available from our shop.

RULERS!
Although we will not be using any specific rulers for this project it is recommend that you invest in a 6 1/2" square ruler if you don't have one already. It is much easier to cut the small pieces, rather than maneuvering a large bulky ruler.

And that's pretty much it to get you started. A nice new blade in your cutter and quick un pick at the ready and it's time to get busy. I'll see you Friday with our first block.

Farmers wife sampler quilt

So this arrived today!

Get ready to start seeing some seriously sweet blocks. I will need 111 of these gorgeous 6" blocks by the end of this project.

You can call us on 02 6836 3606 to get your copy of the book and follow along too. I will be trying to post at least 2 new blocks each Friday.

Now if you've read the online reviews you may be feeling dubious about this book. I know I read ALOT of bad feedback about the template situation. Not to worry though. I have a condensed version of the templates available and I'll be helping you through providing information on when and how to use Thangles to make the perfect half square triangle.

Sewing is so much more fun with friends! Come sew with me.

Happy Friday everyone.

Quilt shop Blog revival

Oh my. What ever happened to our blog? It is high time that we brought back the Cobar Quilt Shop blog and shared what's going on around here.

New bunting for the front of the shop to hopefully catch your eye! I've used Hello Darling range by Moda. It's so funky. Right next to Harvey Norman in little old Cobar NSW.
